"Young people tend to be more vulnerable to negative online influences and to getting caught in vice, he added.
 
“Moreover, they are typically not spending their own money online. There have been multiple instances overseas of children and teenagers inadvertently spending thousands on online games, and this is even where no gambling elements are involved,” he said.
 
“Worryingly, some online gambling games are designed with colourful cartoon graphics and loud upbeat music, which can entice children especially. If a child clicks on or participates in just one, recommender algorithms inbuilt on most social media platforms may start pushing more and more such content to them.”
 
Dr Lee said such games should be regulated.
 
“From the perspective of a gambling addiction specialist, any game of chance can be addictive and harmful, particularly for young people, so regulating or banning such games could help protect vulnerable users.”
 
It is crucial to recognise the signs of addiction to such games, Dr Lee said.
 
These include spending excessive time on these games, neglecting important responsibilities, experiencing emotional distress when unable to win the doll or other prizes, and spending more money than intended to chase prizes.
 
Seeking professional help will be essential to overcome this addictive behaviour, Dr Lee added.
 
Prof Straughan said it is the parents’ duty to watch over their children, who may be vulnerable to such risks online.
“Rather than regulate, the sharper tool is to educate. The responsibility is on the parents to socialise their children and teach them to be careful, as the world is fraught with chances like these (to gamble),” she said."
