3 Gens of NTU Circle of Impact

mentoring nanyang technological university (ntu) Aug 27, 2024
1 enlightening conversation, 2 alumni of @singapore_edb , 3 generations of @ntu_sg students.

@abel.ang ‘s class was one of my favourites when I was pursuing my MBA at NTU’s @nanyangbizschool almost two decades ago. Since then we bumped into each other in our children’s schools a few times over the years.

I was really glad that he agreed to meet with Alice to share his wisdom with her. I learnt much from him too, and came home to share with my children who are around Alice’s age:

“𝐅𝐢𝐧𝐝𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐲𝐨𝐮𝐫 𝐣𝐨𝐛 𝐢𝐬 𝐲𝐨𝐮𝐫 𝐣𝐨𝐛.“

For those who are graduating, the last few months of school are critical especially in the tight job market now.

Take time to document your learning through your internships and other volunteer work, reflect on your unique skills and talents, and work out your personal story.

Create opportunities for networking & developing relationships; these are things that AI cannot do for you.

“𝐈𝐧𝐬𝐭𝐞𝐚𝐝 𝐨𝐟 𝐰𝐨𝐫𝐫𝐲𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐚𝐛𝐨𝐮𝐭 𝐦𝐚𝐤𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐫𝐢𝐠𝐡𝐭 𝐝𝐞𝐜𝐢𝐬𝐢𝐨𝐧𝐬, 𝐦𝐚𝐤𝐞 𝐲𝐨𝐮𝐫 𝐝𝐞𝐜𝐢𝐬𝐢𝐨𝐧𝐬 𝐫𝐢𝐠𝐡𝐭."

The fear of making wrong decisions could immobilise us, or motivate us to procrastinate.

Sometimes we need to take baby steps to get moving towards the vision we have and make adjustments along the way.

The conversation was a reminder for me to keep on keeping on, to rally the village to raise our next generation - one mentor at a time, for one youth at a time.

If each one of us can find one other young adult to look out for, how different would our society be?
